That is incorrect. HPV can cause cancer because it causes the epithelial to reproduce at an abnormal rate and alter the cells’ abilities to regulate reproduction.
Don’t freak out. Having HPV is not a guarantee that she will get cervical cancer. Here’s a quote from the attached source: "But in a SMALL NUMBER of women, the virus survives for years and eventually converts some cells on the surface of the cervix into cancer cells."
There are 6 or 7 types of HPV which cause cervical changes – she must have gotten one of these. There are about a dozen or more strains of HPV. Go to WebMd and read up on everything you can about cervical cancer and HPV and treatments available. She may be in for a lot of procedures over the next few years.
You might have two strains.
That is not the case, unfortunately….If she has been in contact with you and the std she might want to consider stepping up her pap tests. Just to be safe.
